Who are we

STEM Racing™ is a global educational initiative designed to promote STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) skills through the excitement of motorsport. Participants form teams, where they take on roles such as engineers, designers, and marketing managers to develop miniature Formula 1 cars. The programme fosters collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and develop essential skills while competing in national and international events. It can be run as a regular extracurricular activity or a project that complements an existing class.

What do we do

Start a team! Create your own version of an F1 team with 3-6 members. School registration typically opens in the summer term and runs through to the end of the year.

Assign roles and responsibilities, with each member focusing on a specific area, such as car design, manufacturing, testing, branding, or even serving as the Team Principal.

Once your car is developed, you can compete in events to test your design, race against other teams, and present to a panel of judges made up of industry experts. Events start at the regional level, progress to national competitions, and culminate in the STEM Racing™ World Final in September for the top teams.

How much does it cost?

The STEM Racing™ Model Block Car Kit costs £27.60.

Race fees are £10 for primary classes, £25 for secondary classes, and £100 for development and professional Class teams.

Funded by the educational provider.

Hear from Mary Aldersley, a Coordinator for Transmission and Component Assembly at McLaren F1, who competed in F1 in Schools at 16!

My main piece of advice would just be to give it a go! It genuinely doesn’t matter if you win or lose, the competition taught me such a wide range of skills – from designing, making, and racing the car to creating a business presentation, and raising money through gaining outside-of-school sponsorship. I had such a great time, and it was truly an eye-opener as to what I wanted to do as a future career
