Who are we?

The British Women Racing Drivers Club (BWRDC) was founded in 1962 by Mary Wheeler, a racing driver who wanted to create a supportive, inclusive space for women in a male-dominated sport. At the time, women were not accepted into traditional motorsport clubs — so she started her own. Since then, the BWRDC has grown into a community of over 220 members across disciplines including Racing, Karting, Rallying, Hill Climb and Sprint, marshalling, and volunteering. Whether you are a competitor or a passionate supporter, the BWRDC is here to champion women in motorsport.

What do we do?

As a member of the BWRDC, you’ll gain access to a wealth of knowledge, support, and opportunities to grow in the world of motorsport. The Club offers:

Annual Championships: Compete in the BWRDC’s exclusive championships and earn points across your discipline – whether you’re a driver, marshal, or official. Awards and trophies are presented at the end of the season.

Awards Dinner: Held each February, this celebration honours members’ achievements across motorsport disciplines, including the Wakefield trophy awarded for an outstanding contribution to motorsport.

GoldStars Awards: The GoldStars Awards recognise promising female talent. The Junior Award celebrates Club Members under 25, while the Senior Award is for those over 25. A Volunteer’s Award also honours members who support the sport behind the scenes.

Social & Networking Events: From simulators and social gatherings to trackside support, the Club organises events throughout the year (some may be age-restricted to 18+, which would be communicated beforehand).

Community Support: An active Facebook group and online presence make it easy for members to connect, ask for advice, and share opportunities.

The BWRDC supports members from first-time entrants to seasoned professionals, including long-time members like Abbi Pulling and Alisha Palmowski, who have grown with the club and continue to inspire others.

Hear from Caroline Ryder (BWRDC Vice-chair, and Competitor):

The BWRDC is proud to have been championing women in motorsport since 1962. Our aim is to promote, support and celebrate support women in motorsport, providing opportunities for newcomers and experienced racers alike.

The club not only helps drivers, but also encourages women to explore the wide range of other roles and activities, fostering a community that supports progression and integration into any aspect of the sport.

Hear from Becky Crocombe (BWRDC Speed Secretary, Competitor and Marshal):

Whether we like it or not there are still less women than men in Motorsport.  The BWRDC has given me the chance to meet so many like minded women within the sport and across all disciplines.  I am lucky enough to have been a marshal for just over 20 years and in that time it’s been lovely to see the number of female marshals increase.  The fact that you can join the BWRDC as a marshal member is brilliant as you feel even more a part of the sport….. I just wish I had joined sooner!

I also started competing 4 years ago.  Being an absolute novice it was amazing to have the support of the BWRDC.  It’s quite daunting to start in a male dominated sport with no experience.  There are so many members on hand to give support and advice whenever it’s needed and they all remember their first event, first win, first accident, etc. and the range of emotions you experience.  What’s also fantastic about the club is that it’s not about segregating men and women, but about giving women the confidence to be involved in this incredible sport and ultimately to encourage more women into which ever part of the sport they choose to be involved in.
